MCRI files Complaint Against Civil Rights Commission
"Government Bureaucrats Shouldn't Target People Because of their Political Beliefs"
Today Jennifer Gratz, Executive Director of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, filed a complaint against the Michigan Civil Rights Commission for harassment with the State Attorney General in Lansing.
"We are filing this complaint in response to what we believe are illegal, burdensome requests for confidential campaign information. This request is a type of political intimidation that aims to suppress political opinions. We believe that this request is a type of censorship by forcing our campaign to reassign resources to answer an illegal bureaucratic request," said Jennifer Gratz.
The Commission's letter is intended to intimidate and is deceptive in tone. It claims that the Commission has the authority to order compliance when in fact the Commission has ignored the Michigan Constitution and requested documents without court authorization (Article 5, Section 29).
"On one hand the Michigan Civil Rights Commission claims to protect people's civil rights, however, on the other they infringe on the right to assemble and right to free speech. This is unacceptable. This letter gives a tangible example of the Commission's contempt for the law and the limits on their authority," said Gratz.
"The Commission has truly become a kangaroo court by making wild accusations and starting with predetermined verdicts. Instead of harassing people for exercising their free speech rights the Commission should spend more time trying to end real civil rights infractions. We hope that that Attorney General will carefully investigate the actions of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and take appropriate action," said Gratz.
The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative Committee (MCRI), a Michigan-based Ballot Question Committee, is dedicated to giving the people of Michigan the opportunity to end preferential treatment based on race, gender, ethnicity, or national origin by State or local governments. MCRI will make Michigan a place of equal opportunity for all, not a State that uses discrimination as a tool to create "diversity." Achieving "diversity" should never be an excuse to discriminate!
